My iPod touch usage
I wish there was a program like Slife for the iPod touch. Slife is a really cool (and possibly quite frightening) application for Mac OS X (Leopard only) that tracks your time using different applications, at web sites and working with various documents. I’ve only just downloaded it, but I’m interested in seeing how my computer time is being used. I probably don’t want to know how much time I spend in Twitter!
Until such a program exists, I’ll have to rely on my (admittedly faulty) memory. Here’s what I use my iPod touch for:
Most often, I use it for web browsing. Google has done a great job of setting up their services to be iPhone/Touch friendly. Most frequently, I use it to check e-mail or peruse my google reader.
I also check out twitter on the browser, but more often I’ll use the Twitterific app. I’ve used the desktop app, so it’s an interface I’m comfortable with and it is well suited to the iPhone/Touch’s screen.
Facebook – I have to admit, I’m checking Facebook more often now that I have the Facebook app. I’m not sure if this is a good thing or not.
Things – Cultured Code has a very nicely designed To-Do list manager (very GTD oriented, if you are into that sort of thing) called Things. Things is an iPhone/Touch app and also a desktop app. The feature that makes this a killer app is that the desktop app and the mobile app synchronize automatically over wireless when the Mac and the iPhone/Touch are on the same network. I know that Omni Focus has a similar desktop app/mobile app combination, but this seems to work better for me.
Games – not many, but I do have a version of Sudoku and Othello. I’ve been thinking about picking up Spore Origins but so far I’ve been doing just fine on the large selection of free games.
Brain Challenge – a brain fitness sort of program. It has a test of 5 different areas then some exercises to work on those specific cognitive functions.
Apple Remote – control my iTunes using my iPod as the remote. It doesn’t sound that fun when I write it out, but it is kind of cool. I’ve used it to get the iTunes going in the morning before I get to the kitchen, just to set the right mood for the day.
Exposure – a Flickr interface for the iPod/Touch. There is a free version and a paid version. I have the free version and it works great for accessing flickr. I’m not sure what features are in the paid version.
Just added – this is going to mark me as a nerd of the highest magnitude, but I’m really excited about a new app I got. It is a calculator app that has the same interface as my old HP 11c calculator (including reverse polish notation!).
One more thing – I sometimes use my iPod Touch for listening to music/audiobooks/podcasts or watching videos. But the other features get used more often.

I’m finding Twinkle much better to use than Twitterific on my iphone. I definitely recommend you give it a try.

Thanks for the recommendation, Sue. I’ve heard good things about Twinkle, but I wasn’t sure how useful it would be without the GPS/location based elements that are lacking on the iPod touch. Maybe I’ll have to give it a try.
