Podcast #2

I could have spent this time working on my weblog layout, but I thought that what the world really needed was another podcast. Here are some show notes: Responses from last podcast: Alec Couros Brian Lamb, creator of the amazariffic WikiRadio D’Arcy Norman, maintainer of the educational podcast directory at ipodder.org James Farmer made note of my instructions on adding enclosures to a WordPress RSS feed. Brian and D’Arcy are contendors in the 2004 Weblog awards for Best Canadian Blog – good luck to both of you! The Invisible College Alec Couros’ presentation from which I copied this idea Liz Lawley’s writing on the Invisible College atmamamusings.net and at Many to Many Musical credits Musical interlude – Safest Rapist by 46 Ounces Closing – Night Drive by Garnet Rogers Comments always welcome (but not comment-spam!)

Why is my layout pooched?

Yikes – I just took a look at the site (normally I only see the admin interface or the RSS feed in my aggregator). What the blazes is going on? I’m going to need to fix this up a bit, so I beg your forgiveness if the site looks a bit unusual over the next day or two. And if you have any advice to offer, I would be happy to hear from you.

The 900 pound gorilla steps into the blogosphere

Sigh – is blogging now doomed to lose its coolness? Microsoft is now offering their blogging service – see my first attempt at stigmergic microspace. My major annoyance – I can’t hack the CSS for the page, and am forced to choose from pre-made themes. Typical for Microsoft, they offer a totally self-contained, sealed system with no opportunities for the users to tweak. Oh gawd its worse than I thought! I just checked out the page source!! Oh powerful Zeldman, save us from this horror!!!

And the word of the year is …

… blog! (of course) At least, according to Merriam-Webster Inc. as reported by CNN. I find it interesting that the tenth most looked up word on Merriam-Webster’s web site was defenestration, which I admit is a great word but I have to wonder why people are looking it up so often. Addendum – the BBC also has an article about blog making the top of Merriam-Websters list. The BBC article also discusses some reasons why the word has been of increasing interest to the public. For example: The immediacy of many blogs also helped some wield influence over topics that made it in to national press. and a reason that I think is particularly important: In many repressive regimes and developing nations, blogs have been embraced by millions of people keen to give their plight a voice.
