In the iPodder-developer Yahoo group, Julian Bond posted the following method for recording Skype calls using Audacity under Windows.

Disclaimer – I haven’t tried this yet (I’m at school, so I’ll have to wait until I get home), but I wanted to post this information since I have noticed a number of bloggers (most recently Will Richardson) mention that they have been looking for a way to do this:

  1. Skype Options, Handset, disable Auto sound setting
  2. Open Windows mixer, make sure Microphone is included. Unmute the microphone. Set low. Set Wave Out to the same level
  3. Open another Windows Mixer for Recording, select Wave out mix. Set low.
  4. Install Audacity with the Lame MP3 encoder
  5. Set Audacity to 22Khz, 16 bit mono (or 12Khz)
  6. Set MP3 encoding to 64K or 32K
  7. Start Audacity recording
  8. Use Skype to call Echo123 for testing.
  9. Stop recording, check it and then Export to MP3
  10. Done.

As Adam would say – Boioioing! (if it works!)

UPDATE – It works!!! If you are an educational technology type of person, are on Skype, and want to be on one of my podcasts, leave a comment or e-mail me (robNOSPAMwall AT gNOSPAMmail DOT com – sorry for the crude encryption. I really must find a better way of encrypting my e-mail)

I tried exactly the same but seems there’s some interferance between Skype and Audacity. I can’t record with audacity when skype is on. Only when I turn off skype , audacity is able to record. How could I confugure it to work right? Please, drop me advice. Thanks for your time !

That doesn´t work for me, it seems that there is something with my sound card. Anyway, I´ve tried hotrecorder, it´s very easy to use, there is no configuration needed, and the most importat thing for me is that it doesn´t have any problem with my sound car :) try it out, http://www.hotrecorder.com, it’s full of cool features.

I wasn’t sure if the above comment is spam or not, but at least it seems to be on topic. I’ve left it, but un-encoded the link.

The above comment wasn’t spam (though I understand your concern). I tried HotRecorder a few minutes ago for the first time, and I wasn’t all that pleased with the results, but I have reason to believe it may have been a Skype issue. Going to try it again later at home rather than at the office.

If nothing else, HotRecorder’s claims about ease of use and simplicity are true.

Thanks for your comments about HotRecorder – looks like it might be worth checking out, although I have had great success with MixCast Live, available at http://www.mixcastlive.com . I’ve put the link back into unencoded format.
